Barristers Open Decided by Hole In One
"The Fifth Major" was taken by a one-stroke margin fueled by Greg Stivers' ace on the seventeenth hole at Crosswinds Golf Course on Aug. 26.
The winning team, headed by Jason Hays, came in with a Barristers' Open-best of 59. There were four-person teams playing a scramble format. With Hays and Stivers on the winning squad were Bob Young and Greg Harvey.
The team of Chris Davenport, Sam Potter, Dick Downey and Chris Whitfield took second in the tourney with a 60. Hole number 17 proved to be the difference between the top two finishers. Team Davenport took a bogey on the hole, producing a three-stroke deficit versus the winners. The second-place team had 12 birdies and five pars.
Third-place honors went to Spencer Elder, Darrel Wolfe, Gilbert "Gibby" Grogan and Phil Grogan, who carded a 61.
The longest drive award went to Davenport, who was about 40 yards short of the center of the green with his tee shot on number 10. The hole plays 398 yards and has an uphill slope.
Elder was closest to the pin on a par 3.
It was the 30th annual Barristers' Open. Aaron Smith organized the tourney for the second straight year. Trophies were awarded to the top three teams.
