Law Day Honors Attorneys, Features Chief Justice, ABA Prez
At Law Day 2012, the Bowling Green-Warren County Law Association honored attorneys for their work.
Joseph Huddleston, a former Warren Circuit Court and Kentucky Court of Appeals Judge, was posthumously recognized with the William H. Natcher Award honoring retired or deceased bar members whose life represented serving the public interest. Huddleston’s wife, Heidi, accepted the award.
Dwight Burton was given the Pro Bono Publico award for outstanding commitment to pro bono work in the Lawyers Care program. Rebecca Simpson of Kentucky Legal Aid was honored with the Gwyneth Davis Outstanding Public Service Award.
Bowling Green's own Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice John D. Minton was honored with the unveiling of his portrait, commissioned by the local bar, by Bowling Green artist Angela Kuprion. The portrait will hang in Minton's former Circuit Courtroom at the Warren County Justice Center. Minton served as a circuit judge from 1992 to 2003 before being named a Kentucky Court of Appeals judge. He was appointed to the Kentucky Supreme Court in 2006 and sworn in as chief justice in 2008.
Florence, Ky. attorney William T. Robinson III, current president of the American Bar Association, was the keynote speaker. He said the American court system is not receiving enough funding to carry out its role in government.
“This is something so precious ... and we’re treating it like another line item in the budget,” Robinson said. “This is an issue for all the citizens of this country because it is your freedom that is at stake.”
Also featured on the program were several school children who participated in the annual poster and essay contests, and the Holy Trinity School Eagle Chorus.
The Bar's Law Day Committee was chaired by attorney Carrie Jolly Link. She was assisted by Bar President Walter Hawkins and fellow attorneys Amy Milliken, Matt Cook, Aaron Smith and Maria Stewart.
The celebration took place May 9 at the city's new Skypac Center. A large crowd was in attendance.
