The Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Associatiion hosted another successful edition of Law Day on May 4 at the Capitol Arts Center.
Bar President Ryan Reed presided at the ceremony. The theme of the day was Miranda: More Than Words, centered around the ground-breaking case of Miranda v. Arizona.
After an invocation by Brian Howard, the Housing Authority of Bowling Green Voices delivered a musical performance. This was followed by a joint Law Day proclamation by Warren County Judge Executive Mike Buchanon and Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson; and presentations by Warren County Attorney Amy Milliken of student awards for posters and essays about the Miranda case.
Annual Awards are among the highlights of every year's program. Frank Hampton Moore, Jr. received the Gywneth Davis Outstanding Public Service Award, and Brent Stinnett was honored with the Pro Bono Publico Award.
Last but not least, the William H. Natcher Award was presented to the Honorable Ray B. White after more than 50 years in the practice of law.
The keynote speaker was Shawna Virgin Kinger, lead attorney in the Special Prosecutions Unit of the Kentucky Attorney General's Office. She spoke about the history of the Miranda decision and its beneficial effects.
Special guests were several attorneys and staff from the Department of Public Advocacy, who are appointed to represent indigent persons in criminal cases.
Warren County Sheriff Jerry "Peanuts" Gaines opened and adjourned Law Day 2016. The event was followed by luncheon at 440 Main for all attendees sponsored by the bar.
