Law Day Features Awards, Speech by Judge Donald
The annual Law Day celebration presented by the Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Association was well attended at the Capitol Theater on May 13.
Bar President Lindsay Hinton presided over the event.
Following the invocation and a Law Day proclamation presented by County Judge Executive Mike Buchanan and Mayor Bruce Wilkerson, Warren County Attorney Amy Milliken presented awards for the annual student poster contest and essay contest. This year's theme centered on the importance of voting.
The Gwyneth B. Davis Outstanding Public Service award was presented by Bar Vice-President Dov Moore to Amy Milliken for her tireless work on behalf of the people of the community, her help organizing children's programs for Law Day for more years than anyone can remember, and other numerous activities.
The award is named after a late member of the bar who was dedicated to the principles of community spirit and civil rights.
Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice John D. Minton, Jr. presented Richard Hartsock with the Pro Bono Publico Award. Hartsock, an attorney with the law firm of Bell Orr Ayers & Moore, commits at least 40 hours per year toward provision of free legal services to low income individuals.
Judge Margaret Huddleston was recognized posthumously with the most important annual recognition each year, the William H. Natcher Award. The award is designed to memorialize Natcher's ideals of humility, high ethical standards and service in the public interest. Huddleston was Family Court Judge in Warren Circuit Court Division III for 15 years until her death on Jan. 3, 2014.
Judge J. Richard Downey, who by appointment succeeded Judge Huddleston in the office, presented the Natcher award and described Huddleston's "two educations," her incredible work ethic and her personification of the Family Court upon a 1998 appointment and two subsequent elections. Judge Huddleston's sister Jo Ann Ryan accepted the award on behalf of several of the judge's family and friends who were present.
The featured speaker was Bernice B. Donald, Judge, United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Donald spoke on "American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Counts." She was introduced by Charles English. Donald is the first African American woman to serve as a Sixth Circuit judge.
Following the ceremony, the Bar Association hosted lunch at 440 Main Restaurant.
